Are your engines set up for EVC? If so, what model. Here is an example of EVC-C. Do you have an HIU (Helm Interface Unit)?

I'm not sure Don. How can I identify it? This is the model and serial # GXi G, Serial # 4012192457
It's a twin engine set up.

I don't believe it does Don. The original engines were 2000 model 5.0 Gi, I don't remember the model designation or serial numbers but can get them if you need them.

I was hoping to connect the engines to my Furuno display unit which is NEMA 2000 ready. This unit has the capability of displaying engine functions ect. I assumed this connection would allow communication of all ECU information for display on the Furuno screen. Honestly I'm over my head here and haven't been able to come up with any information I would consider valid. Volvo was not very helpful. :( Any help would be welcomed.

Re: Volvo Penta NEMA 2000 ?'s

best I was told the 2000 models were not NEMA compatable. only the later MPI engines with the volvo desined EVC and some ETC models had this feature. pretty much if it does not have electronic throttle control it wont work.
good luck getting any information about it from volvo.

Re: Volvo Penta NEMA 2000 ?'s

I don't work for a Volvo dealer any longer, so I can't convert SN's to engines anylonger. I do know it's a 5.7GXi-G in the 2005 to 2006 vintage.
In order to use the NEMA 2000 interface, you first have to have the EVC system installed. The HIU in the drawing is what will convert the information from the engine ECU to usable information for the NEMA 2000. You would also have to have all the other insturments and sensors needed to run the engine thru the HIU.
You would be looking at a LOT of money, just to see engine info on your radar screen. Of course if you had all that equipment, the System Tach or the System disply would also show that info.

Re: Volvo Penta NEMA 2000 ?'s

Thanks guys. The engine is an 2006 if it matters.

After looking at the diagram and doing some more research I don't believe this will do what I was hoping it would. I was hoping that the system would display sensor parameters like a scan tool would. After reading I realize the Furuno won't support this type of information, while it will display temp, tach, fuel flow, ect, it won't support diagnostics like the EVC does. Since I have all the usual information displayed on the dash anyway I think I'll just buy the Rhinda program for the laptop and be happy. ;)

Thanks Again

Re: Volvo Penta NEMA 2000 ?'s

good luck
only reason I knew anything about the interface is last spring we had a new diesel rig come in, I dont do diesels :), but the drive was the new DP-G and from the factory the drive bellows hd been installed upside down by a tech that cant read and it was torn.
the dealership was in south carolina and the boat was in wanchese NC.
volvo contacted us to repair it.
while it was there the owner asked about adding the new NEMA stuff to his Furuno. thats when I found out even Volvo doesnt know much about it.
about all we could find out was the parts were going to be something over 2000 dollars and no one was quite sure of avalibility and compatability.

rhinda makes some excellent programs, you may find the latest hand held scanner to be as useful as the laptop.
you may also wish to invest in a Fuel rail presure test set.
most issues I have with MPI are fuel related and wont show up on the scanner or laptop.
biggest one is debris in the presure regulator screen, will boost fuel pressure to 80-90 PSI and cause a very rich low speed running condition.

Tommays,he's not referring to the GPS unit themselves, it the NEMA 2000 INTERFACE between the engines ECM and the Volvo EVC computer (the HIU in the picture above) to actually talk to a NEMA 2000 compatable devise, like a radar or gps.

I understaand Don

I am pointing out that on NEMA 2000 that is supposed to be and open standard (like NEMA 0183) they can not even agree on a common connector style and after 3 or more years of it on the market

For some reason Yamaha,Suzuki and Evinrude outboards have made it simple to connect many of there units starting at 40 HP
