Here is the run down, its a 83' bayliner w/ a 4cyl volvo penta, new Cap, rotor, plug wires, plugs, coil and points. Not started in about a year 1 -1/2. Runs great while in neutral, as soon as any load is on the engine, in gear, it dies. Any suggestions? I have thought about rebuilding the single barrel carb, BUT while in neutral its great, so...i dont think thats the problem. Also what is the firing order? I have it set up backwards right now, stupid I know but thats the only way it will run. 1-2-4-3 or something like that. What would cause it to run great with out load on the enigne but die as soon as engaged into gear? Thanks A BUNCH! Dan

Re: Volvo Penta engine problems

Timing being way off, carbs idle mixture being off, dwell being off, low compression, wrong idle speed could all cause your problem. Is the timing belt in good condition? Make sure everything is set to specs and in good condition.
You not only need the proper timing order, but you need to go in the right direction.

I could give you a link to the service manual, but would need to know the model number for your engine.
