I have a 1999 VP5.0 with a duoprop sterndrive. When I run the motor in the driveway with the muffs on, it runs hot, about 225 according to my guage. Does the duoprop have an impeller or does the raw water pump do all the work? Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I'm new to this boat, and I read somewhere that the VP SX sterdrives don't have impellers.

Thanks,
Pat

None of the Volvo drives have pumps in them. That is only done on Mercruiser and OMC.
For your 5.0. you have a belt driven pump on the starboard side of the engine, or a crankshaft mounted pump. If it's overheating, the impeller is probably due for replacement. They are only good for about 2 years 3 max before they don't pump or pick up water like they used to.

Thanks, is the impeller inside the belt driven pump on the strbrd side. The boat is 5yrs old and only has 100 hours on it, but it's been sitting idle in saltwater for over a year.

The impeller will be inside that pump, yes.
It's due for replacement. 5 years and little use, that could be as bad as 2 years and a lot of use.

Yes it's on the inside of the pump.
The impeller should be replaced by years of age, not hours, unless you use it over 200 hours a year.
There are also lots of other things that needs done to that engine and drive. Like the bellows, gear lube changes, especially if it sits in salt water all the time.
Get the boat out of the water and start doing some checking.
You also NEED one of these.

Thanks guys, I've got the boat out of the water and am starting to check everything. I will pick up the Seloc manual when I pick up my impeller. By the way, what should my operating temp be with the muffs on?

Shouldn't be more than 180° if you have a closed cooling system, probably 160° or so if raw water cooled. When you pick up your impeller, get a ujoint bellows also. 5 years is max for it also, especially when left in the water. Oh, and get an alignment bar so you can check the alignment of the engine every time you have the drive off. It's cheaper than pulling the engine to replace the coupler.

Re: Volvo Penta Duoprop Impeller

FYI: Just as windshield wiper blades take what is called a "set" from sitting in the summer heat, these impellers do the same. They always have two or three rubber blades bent over (in the squeeze mode) while sitting still. I find that removing your last year's replacement impeller at the end of the season and storing will give you another season out of it so long as it is in good condition..... remember, it is normally the sitting inside of the pump housing that ruins these, not use. Therefore, a new impeller that has been installed but not used for several years can go bad and be in need of replacement. Also, if you suspect that you have sucked sand into the system, pull it and inspect. Rick

Omega27
Don't leave out the possibility of a worn or stuck thermastat. I had the same situation last year. Checked the impeller and it was fine. Turned out to be a stuck therm in the closed position. No big deal to replace. Part was only about $10.
