Volvo Penta does not accelerate

I have a 97 4.3l volvo penta that quit in the middle of the lake. It has been running very well all summer and we were on the water for about three hours today before it quit. The engine will start and idle for about 5 seconds but then it quits. It also will quit if I try to give it any throttle. Sounds like a fuel pump of fuel line blockage. Any thoughts?

OK - How about 4328PLKD

Doesn't work, the 28 should be 2 letters, what are they?

Sorry RP, can't do it. Since I moved, I don't have a site I can post the .pdf files on. Working on it, just haven't got there yet. I can fix boats, not computers........:(

LOL....I completely understand not being able to fix the computers. I also suffer from the same. :( Thanks anyway. :)

I saw 43GL, but that was the extent of the letters and numbers. I thought you were looking for 5 to 7 total

Now, we are getting somewhere. I was looking for 5 to 7 total, but I did want the ones that were actually there, not the 28. Where did that come from.
What you have is a 4.3GL-PLKD.
That tells me it carbed and a LK model engine.

Now, on with your problem. Since it will start, and only run for a few seconds, that tells me the relay and the pump are both working. Each time you start it, the pump and relay works to add a little fuel to the carb each time.

Remove the fuel pump relay (next to the pump) then make a jumper wire and jump between the Red/purple (30) wire and the yellow/red (87) wire on the relay socket. You should here the pump run. If you do, start the engine (Don't forget to hook up water to the drive) and see that it keeps running. If it does, while it's still running use a meter and check the voltage on the green wire on the socket (85). You should see over 12 Volts, if nothing, check the voltage on the green terminal on the alternator. If nothing, replace the alternator, if you do have over 12 volts, you need a new diode in the green wire.

Re: Volvo Penta does not accelerate

Thanks for your help, I will work these steps. The 4328PLKD came off the engine block. I will check back later today with some more details

Re: Volvo Penta does not accelerate

OK - So I take the relay out, use the jumper wire and the fuel pump fires up. I start the boat and it hums along nicely without issue at low or high throttle. The alternator tests out well at the alternator and the socket. So I put the relay switch back into the socket. Just for kicks, I try to fire the engine back up and it is running fine again. I would like to find the root cause for the issue, so any chance it is just a bad relay switch?

Could have been some corrosion on a contact, or an intermittant relay. Wouldn't be a bad idea to carry a spare relay (or that jumper wire) on the boat, just in case a relay does go bad.

I will keep the jumper and buy a new relay. Thanks a bunch for the quick tips. I learn a little more every day I own the boat.
