Volvo Penta dies out

I have a 1998 Four Winns with a Volvo Penta 4.3GL engine. It starts, idles and cruises fine at low speeds, but dies out at about 20rpms. I was sure it was the fuel filter, but it does the same thing with the new filter. Replaced the fuel pump about a year ago. I'm not much of a boat mechanic. Any ideas?

Welcome to iboats......:)
How many rpms....?
In your case though, I would hook up a separate 6 gallon tank temporarily to see if the symptom goes away.......
It sounds like a tank issue......
It most likely is a partially clogged pick up, anti-siphon valve, tank vent.......

I'm guessing you meant 2000rpms (20 on your gauge). Remote tank is the first thing I would do as well...

Yes, sorry - 2000rpms - today, more like 1800 - shows you what a novice I am all things engine related. I should probably mention that the original fuel pump went out a couple of years ago and rather than replace it, my brother installed an in-line fuel pump which worked fine for a couple of years. This morning, we replaced the in-line fuel pump. The original, non-working fuel pump is still on the engine. but we still have the same problem. We've checked the anti-siphon valve and tank vent. I'll follow your advice and see what we find out. Thanks!

Get rid of it, now
search and see pics of boat explosions, due to that.

Ouch! Sounds like my brother got some bad advice. I'll replace the original pump. Thanks for the info. After calling half a dozen marinas this morning, I still can't find a qualified boat mechanic with time to check out/repair my engine. Sounds like I'm beached for the season.
