Does anyone know of a trusted source for remanufactured Volvo cylinder heads. I have a 2002 5.0 GXI-B engine. Today I decided to track down an annoying exhaust leak and found some corrosion in the riser exhaust port and the valve appears to have some corrosion on it. A quick look with a borescope through the spark plug hole didn't reveal anything of concern inside the cylinder but it looks as if part of the valve guide has been eaten away.

Also is this year intake known as a Vortec style head? I'm trying to weigh out my options on what different years I may be able to use as suitable replacements.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

Why not take your heads to a machine shop and have them repaired?

I agree with the above post, pull the head off and have a new guide installed. Probably be less than a 100.00 dollars.

I agree with having a local machine shop do the work, but I guess my concern is the integrity of the guide boss as it appears to be missing some material probably from water seeping in over time. This engine is operated in salt water.

Anybody have some first hand knowledge of this type of repair?

all unleaded fuel heads have hardened exhaust seats, chev guides are integral so repairing is only as good as machine shop.personally i would throw them away,go to chev and get direct replacement.

Doesnt matter, when they repair it they drill out the old guide and install a new one.

Clearly you have never built an engine.

My local machine shop reconned my one 5.7 head for $160. The other was cracked and they sold me a reconned head for $179 + tax. This was in 2005.
As Bond-o says, they are just run of the mill Chevy Vortec heads, nothing Volvo about them. (Nor Mercruiser or Crusader, or Indmar...)
