Last one guys, in swapping motors I've stumbled on the fact that I have BID ignition instead if a points condenser setup, presumably from as AQ271 or AQ311 that's OK without the ballast resistor, but I do have the wiring harness on the motor for an AQ260A/B the one (WITHOUT) the relay but my old harness for the AQ131D has the relay setup. I've done that invaluable test Don S posted on ignition/starting troubleshooters and everything is OK including turing the key. Starter/solenoid works fine when jumpering the posts 9.6v at coil when key power on and starts and runs fine when + wire from battery on coil. Question is what's the magical wire I'm missing to complete the loop? I have diagrams for both motors for electrical hook up and am at a loss. Or should I just wire in the relay loop from the AQ131D and be done with it?

As always thanks in advance for the tips and yeah prepping the motor took about 20 hours to fix heads and paint motor, 10 to prep transom, bilge, 10 more to swap motors 5 to rebuild carb after soaking for couple days, and so far about 10 to setup, completed installing the leg yesterday right on the verge of having her up and atem!! Great little project.

NO resistor wires or ballast resistors are used with the BID system. The + terminal on the coil should be same as the purple (or white depending on age) wire on the ignition switch.

Not sure what you are asking about the start relay, are you just wanting to install one?

Oh yeah the point... I often forget that sorry. When I turn the key I get nothing even though everything checks out. I guess the question is between the AQ260A/B wiring with no relay and an instrument cluster and system wired for a relay off an AQ131D. The test light isn't whizz bang bright white on the S terminal on the ignition switch when I turn the key, but has always worked as long as I've had this boat.

Well trying to get on the top of the pile again. Being more a mechanical type guy than electrical I noticed there's reference to an 8 guage red wire that's to be installed between starter and alternator on both AQ131D and AQ260A/B
Schematics. I have an orange wire going to the wire harness plug from the alternator spliced to the 8 guage red wire on the other side of the plug?!?!
What the... and oh yeah there's no wire presently installed between starter and alternator on AQ260, but there is on the AQ131D. Didn't know it's part of the starting circuit, but hey if it's electrical it's mostly mysterious to me any ways. This may be why when I turn the key even though the testing light works out at the instrument cluster, the motor doesn't turn over?
Am I on to something here or just blowin' smoke??
Thanks again for any tips I hope this is it.

It's funny how everyone stops when the answers given and you need to find it. Turned out this starter no crank codition was bad wire from ign. switch to S post on solenoid. After much contemplating and reading to find it out I stumbled here.

http://www.prestolite.com/pgs_training/training_4.php

The suggestion to check here first and have someone turn key and check post on solenoid with test light seems obvious "now" but not when I started in on this one. However between that starter test Don S posted and this prestolite read, I did more learning, changed wire all is well. Just the hard wire for now going to test this weekend in driveway and if transom shield passes leak test, the lake after that for performance test. During winter will resplice and add to plug at motor and wiring harness for boat.

Thanks again.

One more thing my system has no "relay" besides the solenoid so I got lost there for a bit. That ws my main hang up really, all these suggestions were based on testing slave solenoid or relay. I said "pardon..." "Relay?" I don't have one why can I still start it with a screwdriver??

Anyway all better
