Hi all,

New member here and was hoping to get some assistance. I bought a RavenBoatworks Admiral Bowrider a year ago. Its in excellent shape. I have to replace the alternator on it. The marine tells me the part is $700.00. I did some searching myself for the alternator and picked one up for about $300 cheaper. My question is this, after researching, i found the alternator for this motor to be a part #873770 aka Part # 18-5944. Its is 14v 60A if i remeber right. Can someone please confirm that this is the correct alternator? It is a 1989 Admiral with a AQ131D motor in it.

Thx for all replies!:)

Re: Volvo Penta AQ131D Alternator Question

It looks like your looking at a Sierra alternator. Here is a link to the Iboats aftermarket alternators.

I think the one you mentioned would work fine. It has listed the volvo parts number 873770 as its replacement. However if you look at the next one up, it looks to have the AQ131 listed as its application. Its sierra #18-5943. Its a 50A instead of the 60A, but is more expensive???

Can you have the existing alternator rebuilt? It would be a fraction of the cost.

BTW, welcome to Iboats!!!:)

Re: Volvo Penta AQ131D Alternator Question

Take your alternator off and take it to your local alternator/starter repair shop (not a marine shop) and have them look at it. Chances are very good they can fix it cheaper than you can buy any new starter.

Re: Volvo Penta AQ131D Alternator Question

Take your alternator off, take it to your local alternator shop and replace it with a single wire Delco, it will save you more than $500. Mine cost about $125 and all I had to do was a simple modification to the alternator bracket.

Have a great day
