Boat is a 77 bahama tri-hull that I have brought back from the dead. I have used it for 3 seasons now for tubing at the lake and fishing/crabbing the bay. The last time I had it out I noticed an oil smell after 20 minutes or so if 80% or so of WOT. Once I pulled the doghouse to inspect, it looks like the oil pan is leaking into the bilge a bit. I checked the bolts and they are good and tight. Question is, how hard is it to change the pan gasket? Has anyone done it before? It looks like I may have to pull the engine, but I REALLY hope that I do not.

Thanks!

It all depends on how much clearance is available in the boat. There's nothing particularly difficult about removing the pan on the B20 engine. Are you sure it's not the front or rear seal, oil cooler, or oil filter?

Realistically, it's not that difficult to pull the engine, especially if it's hanging off the transom shield without front mounts. The wiring harness unplugs and you're only left with a few ground wires and the fuel and water lines.

The front of the pan isn't bad--it's the back. There is hardly any room to get to those bolts at all and the pan will not come out from under the motor with the motor in the boat. I am pretty sure that its the oil pan because a. its leaking from the bottom front of the engine and b. I was trying to change the oil last season by syphoning it out through the dip stick hole....Well the plastic tube I was using got stuck and wont come out. I thought I would have to pull the pan at this point but it wound up that I didn't even have to completely pull the pan. I just removed the front 10 or so bolts and then loosened the remaining ones in the back. let the pan start to fall at an angle and then fished around for the plastic tube. Once i found it, I grabbed it with a pair of needle nose pliers and pulled it out.

I am fairly sure that taking the pan loose and the new oil leak are related.

On a related note, how does one go about changing the oil on these things without just draining it into the bilge?

Thanks again!

On changing the oil, again, it depends how much room you have under there. It may be possible to put a double plastic trash bag under the pan and drain into that. Just be careful taking it out. The other options are to suck it out of the dipstick hole or install a drain fitting with a hose on it and suck or drain it out from there. Here's an example of the hose kit: http://www.iboats.com/Jabsco-Permanent-Oil-Drain-Hose-And-Fitting/dm/*******.647688647--session_id.196065026--view_id.38803

Unfortunately, that one is the wrong size but I put it there so you'd have a picture. Yours takes a 3/4" drain plug. Here's the link to that one without a picture: http://www.iboats.com/Oil-Drain-Adapter-Volvo-Stearns/dm/*******.647688647--session_id.196065026--view_id.187774
