Having some problems the startup process in my Larson Tri-Hull, the motor keeps cranking even after the ignition key is turned off. Boat is in pretty good overall condition, got a new selonoid, starter, and ignition and having the same problem still. Even if you unhook the wires to the selonoid after its trying to start up it keeps cranking anyways until you unplug the battery. Anyone have a clue what might be going on? Thanks in advance for any replies.

Well no great ideas except maybe the ignition switch is faulty or the starter/solenoid is wired wrong. Has it ever worked right?

Re: Volvo Penta AQ130C, 1971. Starting Problems

It did work fine like 10 years ago... last time it was used by my aunt. But when she gave it to me recently, we've had this problem since first time trying to start it. First replaced the ignition, the starter was already new, then replaced the solenoid... same problem still. One thing I read in the manual, it talks about a switch between the ignition and solenoid, I've searched the boat up and down and can't find the switch, anyone know what it's talking about with this switch? Am I possibly missing one?

the book may be refering to a slave solenoid, which not all boats have. If you have a smaller boat most likely don't have one. You'd probably have stumbled into it by now.

Please be more specific about what you've done, you replaced the ignition? the switch?

Maybe someone else can help you troubleshoot it better than I.

Re: Volvo Penta AQ130C, 1971. Starting Problems

Well, my Aunt had a new starter put in before she gave it to us. We still had the problem when starting it for the first time. So we figured it was the ignition, replaced the ignition and same problem. So we replaced the solenoid, and same problem. Replaced the ground wires, same problem. After we turn the key, we can take the key out, unplug all the wires(except battery wire) from the solenoid and it keeps trying to turn over. The only way to stop it is to unplug the battery.

I do have the manual for the boat. The manual says there is a switch between the ignition and the solenoid(but doesnt say where it is or show a picture of it), but I cant find one. In the back of my mind I'm wondering if someone removed that switch and thats what stops the motor from turning when the key is turned off?
