Hey all, I'm new here, so forgive me if I'm bringing up some old news.

I have a 1976 Glastron T-179 Starflight with the Volvo/Penta AQ130/270
I've been searching all over online trying to find some basic maint. parts, but I can't seem to find what I'm looking for. I'm going to be changing my engine oil this weekend, as well as my Lower Unit oil. I'm wondering if I can find the oil filter and some sort of a gasket kit (lower unit dipstick, drain plug) at a local auto parts store? If so, what parts am I looking for.....part number/model? Anything aftermarket that you have found that works.

Also, I'm looking to greese the driveshaft and steering bearings....any tips, tricks, advice I should know when doing this? Should I be replacing any gaskets while doing this as well?

Any help would be great! I want to get this thing out on the water on Saturday!!

Thanks!!

Re: Volvo Penta AQ130/270 parts question(s)

Oil filter is the same as a 1968-75 Volvo 142 (or similar) with the B20, 2 liter (1986 cc) engine. I prefer Wix but not everyone carries them. Use 10W 30 oil for both the outdrive and engine. Will be hard to find gaskets and o-rings locally but look to see if anyone has an o-ring kit so you can get close for the outdrive drain hole. I order 4 or 5 of them at a time from a VP supplier. Would also be a good idea to order a couple of engine drain plug gaskets as well.

For the driveshaft bearings, it's best to lube these with the engine running to help get grease straight into the bearing. This is the cap or grease zerk on the flywheel cover just behing the engine. They came stock with a grease cup but I put a zerk in mine. In addition to the grease zerk on top of the steering shaft, you've got one on the left hand side of the outdrive. That one is for the intermediate section bearings. Don't forget the trailer wheel bearings as long as you've got the grease gun out.

For long term, it's best to plan on inspecting the u-joints and replacing the bellows if you don't know the history. There are several posts here detailing the o-rings and gaskets needed. At the very least, push the bellows back to chack for water and rust if you haven't looked at these before.I also do this once a year at the end of the season as part of winterizing and also do the pressure and vacuum tests on the drive.

Good luck!

Re: Volvo Penta AQ130/270 parts question(s)

Hey, thanks for the information guys, I think my questions are answered on those subjects! One more quick question while I have you here. I don't have the oil pump for changing my oil....in your experience, is it fairly easy to do the old "garbage bag" trick on my particular setup? Plus, how difficult is it to remove that drain plug with the limited amount of room I have to work with down there.

You'll have to forgive me....my boat has been in storage all winter, and I spent all last year restoring the interior (floors, seats, etc...) so I didn't have a chance to get it out at all, and I haven't really looked to closly at what I'm dealing with. We will be up at the cabin tonight through the holiday weekend, so I plan on digging in to it tonight.

Thanks again for helping out a newbie!

That depends on the access. I personally wouldn't think of trying. Imagine what one little snag on a screw, piece of fiberglass, a clamp, or .......... will do to a bag of oil

Yeah, that's definitally the fear....I'll check my clearence before I think about attempting this. Maybe Walmart or an auto parts store sells a cheap pump.....any advice on what inexpensive pumps are out there?

One more tip about removing the oil filter: place a plastic bag behind and as far up the oil cooler as possible to minimize the amount of oil spilled from the filter. You'll save yourself some cleanup ;)
