Hello guys, and first of all...Thanks for all the help!
Anyway, I when I crank over my AQ125b, the starter rotates the motor clockwise, looking at it from the front. Then, when the motor fires...it changes direction. Im not new to motors but this seems odd. It is a used boat so could have one of the previous owners installed the wrong starter? Possibly wired it wrong? If the starter has the polairty wrong, it would spin the motor backward right? When the motor fires, it stops and rotates counter clock wise. This seems like too much stress on all components! Any help is very appreciated!

Sounds to me like it's way out of time and is just kicking backwards when you let off the key and it doesn't start. Dieseling backwards on a boat can also suck water back into the exhaust and on into the cylinders.
I would be checking the timing, timing belt, doing a tuneup etc. Get it all in good shape and it should work. Do you have a service manual????

Thanks for the reply Don, what happened was the Clymers manual has the firing order wrong in the beginning of the manual. But later on in the book it is corrected. This was the problem. Motor fires and cranks easy now. The only thing left is, whe have to direct connect a wire from the + of the coil to the batt. to get her cranked. I'm having the Alt rebuilt as we speak. I think that may solve this issue. Thanks once again!

Also, the starter bendix wouldn't turn the engine if it were turning the wrong direction. It has an overrunning clutch.
John

Now you see why I always tell people to avoid Clymers manuals. They are nothing but pure Junk.
Always use the OEM manuals.

You can get your alternator rebuilt so it will charge, but it's not going to help your ignition problem. You need to start at the ignition switch and make sure you have power there, then check each connection back to the coil to find out where the break in power is.
IF you go to the link below, you can download an operators manual for your engine. It has the wiring diagram in it.

http://www.volvo.com/volvopenta/global/en-gb/marineengines/operators_manual/operators_manual.htm
