Hello,

We are new to the boating world. Actually, not quite there yet. Boated as kids, but now we have our own and are thinking of buying a used boat to see how our kids like it. We are looking at a 1985 Bayliner with a Volvo Penta AQ 125A. Does anyone know what the exact horsepower of this would be, and would it be suitable to tow water skiers? Thanks

Re: Volvo Penta AQ125A

Welcome to Iboats.

Volve rates that motor at 117 HP

I had a boat with a similar engine years back and we did a lot of skiing with it. Bayliner used that in a lot of mid '80s boats so I can't be sure what size your boat is. Ours was a 16 foot and performed well with the correct prop and only a couple people on board. Don't look for it to pop a 200 lbs person out of the water on one ski.

As with any 20+ year old boat you should be concerned about the condition of the floor and transum structure. Boats that age are commonly rotted out. If the floor has any soft spots than you can assume there is more rot below. If the boat seems like it will fit your needs, I'd get it checked out by a marine mechanic. Volvo Motors and outdrives are good but they need to be well maintained like any I/O.

Good luck to you!!

Thank you very much for your help. Your input is appreciated. We will definitely check into the potential rotting and transom issue you have mentioned. Thanks for the advice.
