I just bought this 1983 16ft Invader with an AQ125A and 270 I/O. Now that we have tweeked it, it runs great at idle and up to 1100-1200 rpm and over 1400rpm. However, at 1200-1400 rpm it coughs and dies unles you bring it back to idle or pump the throttle to get it over 1400 rpm. Over 1400 rpm and while out on the river it is a pleasure. Come back in and throttle down, and it's the same story as throttling up. Your suggestions are appreciated.

Harris

Define 'tweaked'. Does that mean you did a complete tune and carb overhaul - because that's what you need to do. A decarb would also be benificial.

Aldo

Re: Volvo Penta AQ125A hesitation and die

I have a 16' 1982 wellcraft with a volvo AQ125 (280 outdrive) and I have the same problem around 2,000 rpm it wants to die. Pumping the throttle gets it over 2,000 rpm's.I havn't had the problem coming back down through the rpm's though. My local boat shop recomended checking the spark advance and carburator. So far I have checked the spark advance in the distributor and cleaned the springs. The carburator kit is $90.00 and i have not purchased it yet. I did find an earlier posting here where a guy had a similar problem with the same motor and he used a B12 spray to clean the carb with some success. I'm going to try the spray this week and see if it helps before purchasing a rebuild kit. Probably should just buy the rebuild kit but the fish bite is to good to wait another week.

I had my carburater rebuilt and it took care of the problem. Of course yours may be different or additional problems.

no expert here but iam think it’s the diaphragms in the accelerator pumps that can cause this, will come in a rebuild kit.

I had a similiar problem on my AQ-131, bought the carb rebuild kit and it turned out NOT to be anything like that, I had some minor, MINOR corrosin on the accelerator pump arm, it bubbled the paint and caused too much resistance on the accelerator pump.

I ch anged it while I had it apart but everything else was clean.......
