I have a 270 drive and the manual says to put motor oil in the lower unit. My question is this right as i would think gear lube would be better? Also would synthetic be abetter choice? Thanks any ideas on a better oil or just use the 10w 40 the manual states would be great

Do what the manual says. And yes, you can substitute syn, but if its like my 280, it calls for straight 40wt, which might be hard to find. Great bulletproof units that work just fine for years on what the book calls for, so its up to you.

Whoops...I need to edit this reply. Manual does call for a multi weight, but it has come to pass that we all agree that a straight 40 or 30 weight works best. I use 40wt in the motor and outdrive now, and it shifts like a knife through butter

I think there are issues with using syn in the outdrive. The sliding cone sleeve doesn't like it.

I could be wrong.
