I can't seem to get my engine to idle slow enough to shift smoothly into gear. Just leaving it in neutral, I have to play with the accelerator pump to keep it running. The points look good, good spark plugs, the accelerator pump itself looks okay, I tore apart, cleaned, and rebuilt the carburator and nothing was plugged up and it looked fine. Should I keep messing with the carb, or could the problem be electrical?
Thanks, Jeff

What is the idle set at? If you messed with the carb did you reset the idle air screw?Check for water in the gas? Put a water seperating fuel filter in the system. It will stop a lot of water. Let us know after you check this.Jerry

Should I keep messing with the carb,

You should never "Mess" with a carb if you don't know what you are doing.

Lots of things could be wrong, worn timing belt, poor compression, tuneup way overdue, dwell, timing, and carb adjustment way out of spec.
It all has to work together.
Doesn't really sound like you are familiar with this motor, what service manual are you using?

Can't go wrong to change to Petronix Ignition Kit # 2842. Takes about 10 mins. to change. No more hard cold starts no more points to worry about, more power and better gas mileage, Cost about 70$ and 130$ if you get the high power coil. Best thing I've done
