5 star marine in florida has kits for $75. From there 30 minutes with a gland wrench. I believe 32mm on the pins

Hi. Just making sure it’s definitely the problem you think it is. These are famous for the actual trim pump valves passing and being the issue. Causes the drive to not hold position and creep down, but not lose oil externally ? Thought I’d ask.

oil seals last about 20 years, 30 years max. my seals in my 1988 were all gummy and leaked. the OP's 1985-1986 boat would have the same fate.

No doubt. Had the same issue with an 89 290 dp. Was the wee ball seals on the old prestolite pump to blame.

That would be for slightly newer models. Mine was an 89’. Definitely original to the boat when new. No separate reservoir tank. All one unit. I’m aware there are a few drives that fly under the “290” flag. DPA dpb etc etc. But generally mine was a 290dp from 1989 with an AQ205 4.3. A friend had an identical boat but from 91. That had a 431 4.3 (same thing) with a 290dp (but perhaps under the newer flag of DP- something). But that had the newer oildyne unit you mention

So weird Scott. Must be a Europe thing then. Every 80’s drive similar to this had the same pump I had, that I’m aware of. Loch Lomond is full of them currently. Could point out half a dozen in the boats just in my yard for sure. Unless I’m getting mixed up with which is which. The oildyne has a separate plastic oil tank eh ? If that’s the case…I defo didn’t have that. They only came on the later boats into the 90’s here. Mostly as far as I know anyway.
