symtoms<br /><br />1. computer is putting me in go home safe mode randomly.. (won't let me over 2300rpm) <br />2. oil pressure guage works (when in safe mode)<br />3. oil pressure gauge won't work and boat runs fine<br />4 Computer seems to beep when I put it in forward or reverse...<br /><br />so far I have cleaned my batery termanals...that worked for 1 day but oil pressure guage went to off and before I noticed the oil pressure guage I pumped out all the gas and put in fresh gas... <br /><br />I'm positive this thing has oil pressure or I would have locked it up long ago...<br /><br />what should I try next? replace the sending unit? where is it? is there a way to trick the computer to see if it is the oil sending unit?<br />could I have a battery going bad? I tried on either battery and both... same issue..

Got a model number? Even better, you got a Serial number. Not all VP 5.7's are the same or have the same ECM and sub systems.

Really need a model number (Or SN) Scott, the year may be for the boat, not the engine package. See link below.<br />Is your engine red or gray??? I know, it sounds silly, but it means something.<br /><br /> Volvo Engine ID

ok 5.7 gxi -b<br /><br />also I found 2 oil pressure sensors the one on the intake and one above where the oil filter remote plugs into the motor (where the filter normally goes)<br /><br />the one on the top is connected to the guage and the bottom did nothing when I grounded the terminal... but there is a relay wire going up to the top sensor...

If the engine has a main electrical connector, see if it's loose. That's what had happend to my merc when it acted up.

Re: Volvo Penta 5.7 trouble shooting

If you have checked all the obvious connections and are sure the fuel system is tight (no air leaks) then the first thing you need to do is get it hooked up to a diagnostic scan tool and find out WHAT is putting it into slow mode. Slow mode (Engine Protection Mode as Volvo calls it) should be at 2500 rpm, anything above it and it will shut down one injector. While it's possible the slow mode may miss it by a couple of hundred rpm, it's usually a lot closer.

I think that's where I will be bringing it in... I don't have the scan tools...

Aren't those modern electronics great.<br /><br />I think I'll get rid of my simple old carburator and points and get some of them great fancy electronics. <br /><br />NOT!

Seriously this is the first and only problem I have had with this boat... It has been completely turn key... maintnenance only... very good to ski with etc... aside from this it has been a dream...

I've never understood why, with all of the fancy electronics and computer controls, you have to bring the boat somewhere and have it 'hooked up' to special equipment to read any diagnostic messages. It couldn't be that expensive to include a very simple led screen that short of actually printing out an error message, could at least display error numbers that you could cross reference in a owner manual or even online.

Re: Volvo Penta 5.7 trouble shooting

You can make a simple code tool to read trouble codes from the ECM, but the engine warning system will not generate a numeric code that can be read with a code tool, you have to have a scan tool. <br /><br />You might try the procedure below, it may help identify the problem.<br /><br />Dave<br /><br />

ok I will try that... I have 2 oil pressure sensors should I disconnect both on step one?

You should have one oil pressure "sender" (variable resistance - for the gauge) and one "switch" (open/closed - for the alarm). I believe you would just disconnect the switch for the trouble shooting procedure.<br /><br />Dave

Re: Volvo Penta 5.7 trouble shooting

here is another question... ok on step 2 if the motor is not in engine protection mode after disconecting the switch the switch is bad or there is no oil pressure?
