No, an alarm will go off, and you may have reduced power, but the engine will not shut off completely.

Knowing the year is of little help, as boats and motors are seldom the same year.
What you need to do is post your FULL model number or serial number.

Re: Volvo Penta 5.7 GSI - 2000 model year

Engine # 4012033328

Engine Model 5.7 GSI PEFS 2001

Boat - 2001 Four Winns - FW 268V _ # FWNCC118I001

Don't think the alram went off----- was in some very thick sea weed (thinking this could of blocked water intake)-- engine was a litle warm-- but even when i tried to restart-- no alram-- think it was running at 185-190 as to where it is usually 160-170-- don't think alram sounds until 200

could this cuase it to stall-- like you turned it off?

could it trip the fuse?

what EFI diaognostic tool can I use? same as a car? or is it different? where would that connect? and would it isolate an eletrical problem - like coil?

someone told me the engine could shut down if it over heated--- other note is that since i left the sea weed area-- it ran for 40 minutes

Thanks for your help

Engine Model 5.7 GSI PEFS 2001

See what I mean, EF in the model number states that it's a 2000 model (gray engine) not a 2001 (red engine) model.

could this cuase it to stall-- like you turned it off?
No, but enough sea weed wrapped around the prop can stall an engine.

other note is that since i left the sea weed area-- it ran for 40 minutes

Ok, you ran it for 40 minutes, did it die again, or did it run fine for 40 minutes and you shut it off.

The Tech Mate scan tool (same as the Mercruiser Scan tool with different decals) http://www.rinda.com/acro/prodlist.pdf will do everything you want on a marine engine.

You need to check 2 things to get started,
1 check for spark from the coil
2 Check if you hear the fuel pumps run for 2 seconds when you turn the key on.

Here is a link to the OEM service manuals for your engine. you will be needing the EFI Diagnostic manual.

With a couple of test leads, check each pump itself to see if it runs. If one doesn't, you probably found your problem.
I built a test plug and harness to run the pumps directly from the battery with a fuse. If the fuse blew with just the pump, I knew where the problem was.

Thanks-- you have been realy helpfull--- looks like you have to buy the complete fuel cell-- 2 fuel pumps, in line filter, etc.... could corrsion on the connection cause the fuse to blow?

the fuel cell kit is like $750----- thought it was worth a try---

your thoughts?

thanks again? --- i really like learning this stuff
