Hi,

I am considering seriousely buying a used larson cabrio 240 with vp 5.0 GL 220hp V8 engine. This engine is not fuel injected and I m getting negative opinions on this engine especially relating to super excessive fuel consumption!

Anyone of you guys has an engine like this which could give me some true opinion on this engine performance and quality?

appreciate your help...

It is a 4bbl Carbureted V8 with electronic ignition, very reliable and simple to work on. Only one fuel pump, not as much to go wrong and almost always less expensive to fix. I do not think you would notice a big fuel economy difference between fuel injection and carbed, not enough to make a difference in any kind of fuel budget anyway. The low-end torque is almost the same if not identical and that is what you feel when taking off, so performance is similar as well. Just my pro-carb (not necessarily anti-injection however) opinion.

I'm not sure what model it is yet a good friend has a 20 ft Larson runabout with the VP 5.0. He's had it since 2002 and it's treated him well. I've slalom skied behind it several times and it had adequate power and have never heard him complain about gas consumption (any more than I do with my VP 5.7 GXi :D).

However, the Cabrio 240 is a pretty big boat for the 5.0, thus consumption could be quite different than a 20ft'er etc.. ~3200lbs compared to ~5800 for the 240.... Not to mention performance - but that may not be your concern given the 240 etc.

Hi Guys, thanks for your input, very much appreciated. In fact my main objective is not high speed performanve but reliable cruising performance on a mid sized cruiser adequate for weekend getaways in the medittaranean sea of Malta which many times is pretyy choppy!

any more comments are welcome..thanks

I have a 5.0 GL engine is 20ft bowrider and the fuel consumption is fine, like Don said the SBC has been around forever and no matter what you buy it will have a SBC in it. That is a pretty close to under powered for a boat that size. IF it has the DP drive rather then the SX single prop it will help.

Sea trail it and see how it performs, I would not worry about fuel burn though.

The 305 may have had some overheating issues on large payload pickup's at one time...but ive never heard of that in boating..frankly its almost impossible..to over heat one in a boat that is.
