Volvo Penta 5.0Gxi-B: Two fuel pumps or one?

Reading through the installation package that came with the Floscan 7000-20b-1 device it says that Volvo Penta EFI engines with two fuel pumps will not be able to display the GPH. This is due to the cycling of the low pressure fuel pump when filling the vapor separation module.

Does my 2K3 Volvo Penta 5.0Gxi-B MPI engine have the two fuel pumps referenced here?

yes
look on the stbd side fwd of the engine.
you will see a vapor seperator tank. the low pressure pump is on the lower stbd side and the high pressure is mounted inside the tank.

Thanks for the info. Damn. I needed the flow computer specifically for the GPH feature. I wonder if there is an approved work around to make the Floscan 7000 able to display stable GPH in this kind of two pump system?

I don't see what your problem is. As I explained in 2 other posts of yours that you just hook that thing up between the engine and the tank. DO NOT, again DO NOT mess with anything on the engine.

You are trying to make a simple installation complicated by worring about the engines fuel system, and the engines fuel system has absolutely nothing to do with how the Floscan is installed or how it works.
Just hook it up like the instructions say and it will work.

Don,

I read your other two posts, Don ... I don't see where you got the idea that I was planning on hooking this flow sensor up on the engine(?) I would be hooking it up right at the output of the fuel tank with an Ezy Flow pre-filter - the instructions in the package are clear enough.

The issue that Floscan is warning about has to do with the two fuel pumps (low pressure and high pressure). The low pressure pump cycling causes fluctuating GPH reads, (not total flow) Floscan claims GPH readings are therefore unusable.

"Just hooking the thing up" when Floscan warns about the GPH problem makes returning it to them unused a problem. On the other hand, if other people have done this with a similar set up, and found the GPH fluctuation not to be a problem, then I will 'risk it' and complete the install.

I appreciate your response, but I understand HOW to hook it up. I don't understand whether it is going to work for GPH purposes. If anyone can let me know how it worked in the 'real world' with similar equipment, I would be most thankful. Ed Sanford, Floscan tech support said this was the right instrument, but the package contained this big red addendum to the contrary. Sorry if my previous post was unclear.

I have seen it work before on 8.1 engines that uses the same VST setup.
however occasionally at low engine speeds it wont read as the VST allows little make up fuel making the fuel flow on the suction side cycle a bit, usually its gone by 1000 RPM or so.

Thanks, for that info. I heard from another person who uses the twin Floscan 9000 that it wasn't that big of a deal, also. So I'll push on. I'm still waiting for the Ezy Flow filter before I install the gas side of things.

I ran the cable yesterday, and just need to swap the tach out. It looks like the two instruments are the same size, and there seems to be ample room to do this. I hope there aren't any surprises as far as the tach signal is concerned. It's a leap of faith for me, that what drives the "Send" lead on the OEM instrument will work as well on the Floscan 7000.
