Hi All,

Just checked out this site and "WOW" there seems to be a lot of knowledge "floating" around. HeHe Hopefully someone can give me some advise with my problem.

I have a 1999 Four Winns 220 Horizon with the Volvo 5.0 Gi pwtr. The boat has been great until now. I keep it on a lift at the local marina. It was winterized last fall no problems. When the service tech went out this spring to service it, he called and said there was a lot of gas mixed in with the oil. He said that it was probably an injector leaking.

I went out and pulled the flame arrestor off and turned the key on. When the fuel pump kicked on the right injector dumped enough raw gas into the throttle boby to fill-up that side. It only lasted about 2-3 seconds before it shut off. I pulled the connectors off the top of the injectors and swaped them. When I turned the key back on, the left injector dumped the gas. The right one was OK.

The only thing I can think of is that the ECU has a problem. I'm hoping one of you guys can give me more suggestions before I go and spend $1128.73 on a new ECU.

Thanks A Bunch,

Ron H.

Sounds more like a leaking injector than an ECU. The ECU is an electronic part and only fires the injector.
Just disconnect the injectors and try it.
Both the low and high pressure pumps run for 2 seconds when the ignition switch is turned to the run position. That is normal. But the injectors are NOT being fired at that point.

Remove the two main connectors at the ECM. Remove the connector from the injector that is "leaking", and check the injector ground circuit (usually green or blue) to see if it is shorted to ground.

I tried unpluging the bad injector and turning the key on earlier today. I could hear the fuel pumps turn on and then off but it didn't dump fuel down the throttle body. I'll check the ground circuit tomorrow morning.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Re: Volvo Penta 5.0Gi Injector Problem

OK. I went back out, unpluged both injectors and turned on the ignition and the fuel pump pressured up normally. Both injectors stayed closed. I checked the wires and nothing seems to be grounding out.

The wires that are giving me problems have constant voltage when the ignition is turned on. I can pull the connector off of the injector and it closes. When I reconnect it I can hear the injector "click" open up. It's the same case on either injector I connect the plug to.

Question, do both of the injectors fire at the same time all the time or do they run independantly of each other? What would happen if I used jumper wires, or splice the wires to run both injectors off of the bank that is good? Could this further damage the system? Would that bring the voltage down to much to open and close the injectors properly????

Thanks in advance for your help,

Ron H.

Re: Volvo Penta 5.0Gi Injector Problem

Your ECM has two injector driver banks. In a TBI application, each injector driver drives one of the two injectors, and they are fired alternately, not at the same time. Driving both injectors with one driver MIGHT work, but at the very least it would disable Engine Protection Mode, since this shuts one of the two drivers down.

You really only have two possibilites here;

1) One the ECM's driver circuits is shorted to ground somewhere between the injector and ECM. Find and repair.

2) One of the ECM's internal driver circuits is bad and shorting to ground - may be time for a new ECM

The last time the original poster even came to this site was May of 2008, so I doubt you will ever know.

If you have a problem, ask it, reading what fixed someone elses problem doesn't mean it will fix yours.
