I have a 1995 Four Winns with a Volvo Penta 5.0 SX. I am planning on draining and refilling the gear lube in the lower end. I do not have a manual. I am not sure which screw is the vent screw. I drained it and removed the upper screw on the same side but as I tried to refill the gear lube it built up pressure and when I removed the pump on the bottom it squirted out. I have done this on a merc and have not ran into this problem before. Am I doing something wrong.

There is no vent screw on the side of the drive, not sure what you found there. The vent screw is next to the shift mechanism under that plastic cover on the back of the drive, along with a dipstick on top of the drive.
One thing you don't want to do is overfill the drive. So check the lube after it has had plenty of time to settle. It can be very slow about it when cold.

Below is a link you can download an owners manual for for free. You will need your FULL engine model number.
