Hello,
I have a 2005 Seaswirl striper 2101 with a Volvo Penta 5.0 I/O with only 100 hrs. The problems I'm having is when I power up in the water. If I'm on the trailer and power up I get enough power to blast into space!! (sounds GREAT). Starts right away, idles fine, however, when I'm in the water (salt or fresh, waves or flat) and I push the throttle down I can barely get over 10-15 mph as it bogs down....it almost feels like I'm pulling a barge or something. I called my service center and they said it sounds like it may have a carbon build up but would't it bog down while on the trailer as well if it was carbon?? I use only high grade fuel and put ethanol treatment in every time. I also recently put in new fuel pumps (replaced both).......any ideas??.....Thanks!!

If you are talking about revving the engine while in neutral on the trailer, that pretty much means nothing. You could rev it up with only a couple cylinders firing.

Check compression.
Verify all spark plug wires are in the correct firing order.
Check fuel pressure.
I am assuming this if fuel injected since you have more then one fuel pump.

What is the history of this boat? Has it ever worked properly?

Hi there, welcome to iboats!:)

Do you happen to know the full engine model such as 5.0 GXI-J for example only?

Did you have power loss/bog before the new fuel pumps or after?

Most of the time engines do not show symptoms of power loss while free revving out of the water. Once the engine is under load by going into gear in the water, is when you'll notice the performance issues especially engine bogs like you are experiencing. The propeller in the water moving the boat is what put's the engine under load.

Thanks for the quick reply......it's a 5.0 GXi, V8 fuel inj 270 hp. It's been doing this since I've owned it (2 years).....I was hoping it was the fuel pumps but it still does it even after they changed it. Yea it only happens when it's under load.

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,...... You've owned a boat for 2 years that won't run over 15 mph in the water,..??..??

The way it runs on the wagon is totally irrelevant, to Any of the possible causes,...
Without a Load on it, a V8 runnin' on 6 cylinders will Rev to the Moon, No problem,....

I guess ya oughta start with the basics,.... Are you doin' the work,..??

I'd pull the fuel filter, inspect the contents of the old one, 'n slap on a new one,.....
It don't take much water, 'n crud to create the symptoms yer seein',.....

I have the exact engine on mine. Are you hearing any whining coming from the fuel pump?
