Hello, I'm looking for some direction on a newly acquired boat that had suffered engine damage in the past. The boat is a 2003 Chapparal 190 ssi with a Volvo Penta SX drive and a 5.0 GXIB engine Prod # 3869134 Ser. # 4012080909 (fresh water flush kit installed by dealer when new). This was a salt water boat used in the Ft.Lauderdale, FL area.
The original owner (purchased new) stated that approx 3 years ago he had a hard time starting the engine (crank over no fire), pulled the spark plugs blew some water out and started the engine, it ran good afterwards. The next used the same no start problem, crank over no firing. He let the boat sit a week or so and then retried it to find the engine locked up, even unable to bar over with the spark plugs out.
Now it has sat a few years with the spark plugs out. I removed the engine and found the exhaust risers to be very corroded, one crumbled at the hose connection. I had to beat the pistons out for removal and I am in the process of a rebuild. New riser elbows were purchased #3862664 same # as originals. I thought maybe the original internal exhaust flaps were corroded out, but now a local Volvo dealer informed me that this original application did not use exhaust flaps. I'm used to seeing water flaps in Merc Cruiser engines. I don't want the rebuilt engine to suffer this costly issue again. Before I reinstall the engine is there a better fix, or were the very corroded and occluded risers my problem all along for the water in the cylinders.
Thanks

If the old risers were bad(like you said) then the only thing you can do to prevent it from happening again is to flush very well with the flush adapter after using it. Not much else you can do really.

Make sure that flush adapter gives the water pump water so it doesnt burn up when running the engine. Not sure how the dealer would of installed it. There was a certain range of models where the flush kit didnt give water to the raw water pump but I dont know what years that covers.

I would replace the manifolds AND the risers.

The flush kit was tee'd off the two lower block drains, so no, I wouldn't think the sea water pump on the front of the crank gets water. I'm also only planning on using this boat in fresh water from now on. Thanks

Does everyone out there feel the water in the engine cylinders came from the bad risers?
Thanks

Sure it did, but you also need new manifolds too. IF the risers are that bad, the manifolds are too. Look at the sealing surface between the riser and manifold. That is what goes normally goes bad first.

The boat is a 2003 Chapparal 190 ssi with a Volvo Penta SX drive and a 5.0 GXIB engine

Just so you are aware, if it is a 2003 it is a 183ss. It was rebadged the 190ssi 2004 through 2008. Since it has the 5.0 it is definitly a 2004 or newer when they added the v8 optional power. That is a heckuva a nice boat with that v8 in there. The 190ssi/183ss started its production run in 2002. Post some pics of your rig when you get the chance

The boat should perform well with the V-8. I won't know until it's running. Previous owner said it would run 55-58mph. We also own a 1994 Chapparal 2130 SST with a Bravo Three magnum 350 and I hope this boat handles as nice.
