Hello,
I have a 2006 Glastron SX195 with a Volvo Penta 5.0 GL-F. When I took it out the first time this season I noticed that my bilge pump had turned on. When I opened the engine compartment I noticed that the hose that runs from the water pump out was disconected and sending water into the engine compartment. By this point the engine got up to about 225-250 degrees. I shut it down and got back to shore. I reconected the hose and started it up again. It ran ok and the temp stayed int he 150 range so I went out on the lake. After dragging the kids around on the tube the engine began heating again. Went up to 225 degrees and would not go back down. I took it in and called it a day. The next day I replaced the water impeller thinking that it may have gone bad. When I started the engine the temp guage went right to 225 degrees. I tried flushing the engine just to make sure there was no stuff in the hoses. Seems to be fine but the temp guage still shows 225 degrees. Could this be a bad thermostat or should I be checking something else? I only have 45 hours on the engine...all servicing has been done. Could there have been some damage done from it running at 225? The engine buzzer never came on saying that it was overheating? Thanks for your help!

When I started the engine the temp guage went right to 225 degrees.

It may be a bad temp sender or gauge. I would suggest starting it on muffs and checking the engine with one of those IR temp guns to verify it's overheating or not.

Thanks Don S....where would the temp sender be?

On the thermostat housing there is what looks like a brass bolt on the side with a wire coming out of it. Is that the temp sender? When I look at the exploded diagram of the cooling system it shows all the parts except that bolt. Anybody know?

Yes, that is the sensor, some VP have them on the t-stat housing, and some have it on the intake manifold. Maybe that is why the manual does not show it. Or a poor after market manual. You should invest in a factory manual set if you have not already done so, they are not very expensive and really way better then clyimer or the other after market manuals.

Was this boat winterized? Sounds like someone forgot to reconnect the hose. Do what Don said, but if you got to 250, you may have blown a head gasket.

Re: Volvo Penta 5.0 GL-F Overheating

Just to follow up on what I've done and found out. I replaced the Temp Sender on the therm housing and the same thing occured. Temp guage goes right to 225 right when you start the engine. I went back in and the dealer said it should be a bad temp guage. I went to replace the temp guage and the same thing happened. When I disconnect the sending wire from the back of the temp guage it doesn't read anything on the temp guage. However, when I reconect it to the to the temp guage and disconect the wire from the temp sender on the therm housing it goes right to 225 on the temp guage. I thought that was kind of weird so I started looking around. I found the other temp sender on the intake manifold. I disconnected that wire and the temp guage didn't read anything. So found the problem...It was the temp sender on the top of the intake manifold not the one on the therm housing.

With that said just one more question. The boat was winterized by a dealer and it looks like you are correct. Either they forgot to reconect the hose or the place I recently took it to forgot. The engine got how...close to 250 but the engine buzzer never went off. It seems to run fine right now. How would I tell if there is any true damage like the head gasket being blown?
Thanks for your help.

The oil was the first thing I checked. The oil looked good. So hopefully I didn't have any damage besides the temp sender.
Thanks!!!

Re: Volvo Penta 5.0 GL-F Overheating

I have an '05 Glastron with the same 5.0 GL engine and have experienced a similar problem with the temp. gauge. I bought a new gauge but haven't installed it yet. Did you replace the temp. sending unit on the intake or was it just a loose connection? Problem has been occuring on and off since last season so I haven't been too concerned. It's clear the engine isn't overheating. Thanks.

The senders operate on a resistance principle, somewhere there has to be a ambient reading. I say the sender is most likely the candidate.

My 2004 5.0 GXI overheated every time I would start it cold. When the engine started to limit the rpms, and the alarm sounded, I could get it to cool down by reving the engine out of gear. Impeller or Thermostat?

I pulled the thermostat housing, but could not figure out how to get the thermostat out of it. Is there a trick to it?

Start a new thread scott. don't just hijack a year old post with a new question at the end. Your post will get overlooked immediatly by 99% of the posters.
