Hello,

I am trying to get my boat going. It would turn over and start and the it made this clicking noise and does not turn over. The blower doesn't work or any of my accesories. ITS DEAD. I measured the voltage from the battery to the starter and it read 12 volts. I checked my ignition for wiring problem and no luck. I also check my thottle to make sure there is a good connection. I also tried jumping it and no luck either. Could this be my starter? Or is there something else I am missing? Please Help!
Thanks IBoat

Are the battery cable connections clean and tight and the cables in good shape, not wire strands all green and corroded? This includes positive and negative cables.

You said the battery showed 12 volts. Was that with a DVM or VOM or the instrument volt meter, and what happened to the voltage when you turned the key to the start possition?

One other thing.
Volvo has used a lot of different 4 cylinder engines over the years, what's the model number of yours. It really helps in troubleshooting to at least know what you are working on.

THanks,

I the connections are corroded a little, so I will try cleaning those. I will also measure when I tun it over. Thanks for your help, if this doesn't work then I will get the model #.

Mike
Portland, Or.

You don't have your throttle command in gear, do you? There is a switch integrated into the command that shuts off the starter when in gear so you don't cut someone into small pieces when cranking (or crash into another boat).

I think I may have had the same problem, I replaced the starter, but am not sure now if I needed to. behind the starter there should be a bolt going into a gear housing that has 2 grounds on it. take out that bolt and clean the connections, see if you were having the same problem I was.

If your engine doesn't click or anything, and you don't see the obvious..take a look at the starter relay (I think that is what it is called). It's a small cube shaped deal mounted between the coil and the mechanical fuse on my AQ131D. Doesn't look like much. That gizmo shorted out a couple years ago..I had to physically remove it to see that it was scorched. Simple fix if that is it. Stupid me...I chased continuity, solenoids, wiring for hours before I caught it.
