I have just recently completed an order on a brand new Regal 1800 Bowrider with a Volvo Penta 4.3L V6 (190HP). I will be taking delivery of the boat in a few weeks. I am brand new to boating so I appologize if this is a typical newbie question. I looked through the rest of the forum before posting this question and didn't really find the info that I was looking for.

Basically I'm wondering what the break-in procedure, if any, would be on a engine like this. I'm sure it is the manual but since I don't have the boat yet, I don't have the manual yet either. I especially want to know how long I should wait before water skiing behind this boat.

Thanks!

You will get detailed instructions in your manual and from the dealer (I hope). I got a new boat 3 years ago same motor as yours. You need about of hour of break in time. After that (next 2 hours) do not cruise at constant rpms for long periods of time. Can somebody explain why that is?

Follow the instructions to a tee on break in. It's a good time to get familar with your boats operation, functions and handling.

I went out after work one night to get the first hour in and was ready to go that weekend. Because I tend to baby my toys I didn't push it real hard the first weekend.

Kevin

Regal will supply a Volvo Penta Owners Manual (Publ No 7797286) this explains all the basics about the engine, including running in. The breakin period lasts 20hours . 1st 5-10 minutes operate engine at fast idle then remaining first two hours accelerate onto plane quickly and throttle back to maintain plane, vary engine speed by accelerating to 3/4 throttle for 2-3 mins then back to minimum cruising speed. Next 8 hours 3/4 throttle or less. Final 10hours full throttle for 5-10 mins at a time then reduce to idle to provide cooling. At 20hrs the oil needs to be changed and its first service due.

I also recommend getting the proper Volvo Workshop manuals they explain everything that needs to be done to service / winterize etc, you prob dont want them until the warrenty expires!.

Good website for Volvo Stuff is http://volvopentaparts.stemtostern.com

Have fun Ive been really pleased with my Volvo 4.3GL and Regal 1900LSR.

In answer to your question , Id get the first 20hrs and oil change before sking but thats just me.

The variation of speed is done to mainly seat the piston rings.

A new (or renewed) engine run at constant speed and load will tend to set up wear patterns. Vatying the speeds spreads out the wear patterns over the entire wear surface(s).

I have a 190HP Volvo 302 Ford. The owners manual gave different hours thast the power could be increased to actuall full power burst not to exceed certain RPMs. One thing to consider about break ins for Inboard auto dertived engines. They work hard. They run at much higher RPMs and never coast. They are in a wet enviroment sealed in a bilge. Take care of it and you will have the same service I have had. I have nearly 600 hrs on mine trouble free!
