Here is the long story...
I bought a used boat last year and have been running it for a few months this year. One day the temperature climbed up rapidly to 210 degrees. I found the raw water pump had failed (the blades had shredded and were nowhere to be seen) so I replaced it with a new one. At the same time I went to check the thermostat only to find that it was missing. I purchased a new thermostat and ran the motor. The temperature started to climb to 200degrees. I tried removing the thermostat and running it as before and everything appeared normal (and yes I did check the stat to see that it was opening at the proper temperature). I took thermal readings on the block and found cooler temperatures at the sensor location but readings as high as 190 at other areas (I tested the sensor as well and it works fine). The lines to the raw water pump are cool so we are getting water, however, the lines from the recirc water pump seem to have very little flow (I can compress the line by simply squeezing it) and no pressure. I did the best I could to check for obstructions even to the point of using a shop vac to draw any water (and bits of blades) out of the block. Everything seemes clear. I had taken apart the recirc water pump as well but everything looks good. No slop in the bearing, no leaks, impeller looks solid as well although I could only see the back side of it without pulling the bearings. Is it possible there could still be a problem with it (I would expect to see more flow)? I would think if I had more flow recirculationg through the block my problems would go away. Any thoughts?

Re: Volvo Penta 4.3 Overheats: Stat Missing

Someone before you took out the t-stat cause it was running hot. Wrong thing to do.

They should have found the problem and fixed it.

Now your left with the problem.

You took off the hose running to the t-stat from the transom to look for pieces in there?

You have power steering? Little pieces and all kinds of stuff gets stuck in there common problem.

Could also be the risers clogged up. You run the boat in saltwater?

5 years tops on the risers than has to be changed out.

You have a flapper on that boat? When risers off check that.

You say you checked the T-stat housing? No pieces in there. Bypass hole is where pieces would be.

Could try to back flush?

Good luck! Keep us posted.

Thanks for the info chiefalen. The boat is fresh water only but I will go through you suggestions one at a time and post what I find.

No luck yet.
I pulled off every hose (to oil cooler as well) and everything is clear.
Checked risers and all is well.
Where is the flapper? Didn't see or check that.
Tried backflush earlier.
Checked entire thermostat housing and all is clear.

I also took the raw water pump hose off and ran it (water pumps great).
When block is hot the manifolds are cool to touch so water is flowing out with no trouble (raw water pump pumps water to thermostat housing which is directly connected to both manifolds).

I removed the thermostat housing and removed the hose to the recirc water pump. I then took a shop vac to the thermostat opening and air draws right through (no blockage). I still think water is not circulating through the block. When the stat is removed, I get a little flow just from the pressure of the fresh water pump but it doesn't seem that the recirc water pump is doing anything (no pressure at all when running - feels the same as when engine is off).

Is it possible that the recirc water pump is the problem? I have no bearing noise and it is not leaking but are there any seals that can fail and give the problem I am seeing? Any way to test this?
