This is a 1998 I/O engine. Just got the boat a week ago w/ less than 100 hours on it per original owner. Engine and boat looks top notch. Started fine, took out on the water twice for a couple of hours each time, ran fine. When attempting to launch third time engine will crank over but will only start when handle is placed to full throttle position and will only rev up, then die even when handle is brought back to fast idle position. This was repeated many times. Tried starting in neutral position and engine grumbles like it wants to kick over but just doesn't. Does this sound like a fuel problem? Water in fuel? Fuel pump problem? Fuel filter was removed once I got home and was full of fuel. Carburetor fuel filter screen was visualized but looked absolutely clean. Please help

Remove the engine fuel filter and dump the contents into a clear container and see if there is any water in it.

Sounds like a fuel problem to me. Once you check for water, another thing you can do is remove the fuel line from the pump (the one coming from the tank, it's right next to the spin-on filter) and use fresh gas from an outboard tank (or homemade equivalent) as the fuel source. That would eliminate junk in the tank and the AS valve (or point to them depending on how you look at it). Is your engine a 4.3GL LK? If so, I have all the factory manuals for it...(and a scanner!:))

FamilyGuy, did you resolve your problem with the 4.3 GL not firing? I have had the SAME PROBLEM every year on my 1999 Four Winns I/O. It'll start up just fine and run great for two or three runs. We stop to eat lunch for an hour, and it won't start--it cranks but won't fire. Changed the fuel filter, added gas, checked the wiring, checked the kill switch. It won't go. Any ideas before I take it to the middle of the lake and pull the plug?!

If you have a question, start a new thread, your question will be lost when stuck on the end of someone elses post.

To Don and others that have replied to this thread I initiated, I want to apologize.:( This is the first forum I have ever communicated on. I attempted to view online responses to my question the day after I encountered the problem mentioned, but once I resolved the problem I abandoned the thread and apologize for that.

It turned out the emergency kill switch was only partially disengaged even though the clip with safety lanyard looked fully seated. The engine started fine and idled perfectly after I pulled out the clip completely and reinstalled it.

Sorry again for trying to get something without giving something.:)
