Folks,
(Mechanic) friend just been offered a very good deal on a Larson bowrider with a Volvo Penta 3ltr engine. The engine has seized. The owner says that he put it away last year, went to use it this year and it wouldn't turn over. The head has been off with engine out of the boat and still won't crank so not a seized gearbox. So it has to be something to do with the bottom end.

My question is: are these engines common? Worst case scenario, where could a re-conditioned engine be bought? And would it be expensive?

It is a 1997 boat so i'm guessing same age engine, with the SX out-drive. Here is the boat: http://www.donedeal.ie/for-sale/boats/1310004

Re: Volvo Penta 3ltr petrol engine replacement

A couple of options open to you. First, understand that you won't be able to use a "generic" engine from something else. The 3.0 Liter is an industrial engine and was never used in cars/trucks, etc.

You can buy a remanufactured engine for around $1500 (core exchange) or, you can have the existing one rebuilt. You may even be able to get a little better deal on remanufactured if you are CERTAIN the head is still good and just buy a short block.

Thanks for the info.

Are these the same engines are the 3.0l Mercruiser engine?

Any idea where the re-con engine could be bought for $1500? I'm in Ireland so would obviously have to get things shipped but he understands that
