Volvo penta 3.0gl starter problems

I have a 94 Volvo Penta 3.0 GL which the starter is giving me some grief, I had to tap on the solenoid to get it to start so I opened up the solenoid and cleaned up the contacts but still have a problem. I noticed that the lever going to the starter from the solenoid is a bit corroded. Does anyone know if it is ok to spray WD 40 on it to hopefully loosen it up or have any other ideas?

Take the starter to a starter repair shop and have it gone thru. There is probably rust and corrosion inside the starter. How deep has the water been in the bilge?

I have only had the boat for a couple of weeks and there has never been more than a drip or two however I do not know about prior to me. Do you know if it is ok to spray the conector off of the selenoid to the starter with WD 40?
