Volvo Penta 3.0 Noise coming from back of engine, and before stern drive.

I have just purchased an 05 Chaparral with a Volvo Penta 3.0 with the SX Drive. I took the boat out for about 10 mins for the first time the day I picked it up from the dealership, ran excellent with no problems... The next day I took the boat out, ran excellent however the belt started to fray, so we called it a day... The boat immediately went back to the shop on the following Monday. Plugs were changed, belt was changed, oil was changed, gear lube was changed, just your standard service. Picked up the boat the following Saturday, and took it to the water. Engine ran excellent, and fired rightup and idled soo smooth. However after taking off and getting going there was a loud rattle, or vibration coming from behind the engine, and before the stern drive. Only did this noise at about 4000 rpm. Put the engine in neutral, and it still does it. Did my research online and must people have been talking about the Gimble Bearing, and the U-Joint. I also read about there being a grease fitting on the stern drive. The following day I greased the fitting and ran the boat on the hose, and there was no more noise. I took the boat to the water and ran it. At first there was no noise. I reached top speed, and all was good. But just as I let off of the throttle to head back, sure enough, the noise came back. I have taken the boat back to the shop. Does the evidence point toward the gimble bearing, or does anyone have any suggestions? Also have checked all fluids, and oil levels they are fine.

Ayuh,...

Your diagnosis would lead anybody with common sense to be looking at the Gimbel Bearing,....
As long as the Dealer is still working on it,... Let 'em.....

Has anyone pulled the outdrive and checked alignment, gimbal bearing and ujoints since it was new? That should be done yearly.

I thought so, nothing has been done yet. They should be starting on it tommorow. The boat only has 115 hours on it, so hopefully its no big deal.
the drive has not been dropped yet, but I believe that is the first step.

Any additional insight is appreciated.

It only has 115 hours, but, it's also 4 years old and hasn't had the drive off............... that's sad :( and lack of proper maintenance.

True, that is why I have immediately serviced anything that I thought should be serviced. I was not familiar with the gimble bearing since this is my first boat, but working at the dealer ship I was familiar with the more basic things. The electronics were my responsibility, and I have managed to get the trim guage working, which was the only other problem with the boat that I was aware of. (Bad connection at the main harness).

Any other suggestions to ensure that I can enjoy this new toy this summer coming up.

Don't just collect manuals, do the maintenance. Probably needs an impeller big time.
Fixing Electronics and gauges doesn't keep a 3.0L engine and outdrive running for very long.

I gotcha, I'm trying to leave the engine service to the professionals.

Ayuh,...

It shouldn't take you to long to be as Good as the Pro's,...
Especially on your Own Motor....
Then you can throw all that Labor Money into the Gas Tank....

Mechanic inspected drive, and said that gimble and u-joint were in new condition. Packed with grease, and no sign of water. He now seems to think that it might be the damper plate. A bolt possibly loose or missing that connects it to the fly wheel. This guy is an old timer, the best in the area and is an actual volvo service shop. Luckily he has all parts in stock. I guess we will see

It don't have a dampner plate, it has a coupler. Dampner plates were only used with the older 290 style outdrive, not the SX.

With the drive off, start the engine and see if it still makes noise.

I wouldn't be suprized if it was the internal exhaust flaps . Happens all the time and always makes those wierd noises at certain rpm's.

Volvo's of that year don't have any exhaust flappers.
