According to volvo, part is discontinued, according to 4 local marinas, they no longer install the parts, in fact are told to remove them if sighted. they were recalled. but now i have no method of protection against water rising into the exhaust and hydro locking my motor. i now have to, according to volvo, be careful while manervouring....... any advice? any place to get a exhaust flapper? can i use a mercruiser piece?

Nope, Merc won't fit, and Volvo doesn't make them anymore.
Kind of narrows down your options doesn't it.

when this motor goes, a mercruiser is going in. is swapping a 3.0 I4 to a 4.3 v6 a big deal or does it even matter so long as i get a complete motor/drive? thanks man

I don't know what your big problem is. I know of a lot of 3.0L Volvo's without the flappers that have been in use for years with no problems. Volvo also did the same thing on the other engines, and there are lots of them out there that seem to be working fine.

I appreciate your previous response but why a nasty one, was just wondering about an engine swap.

It wasn't intended to be nasty, if you read it that way, sorry, but it wasn't intentional.
But doing a complete repower from Volvo to Merc because of a flapper valve in the exhaust seems a little odd. The Volvo drive is much better than any Alpha, and the engine is the same.....................

Don - miscommunication on my part, i meant when or if ( i plan on preventative maint. religiously dont get me wrong) i would go a mercruiser just because the availability of parts. Who knows maybe i'll learn a ton more from this site and change my mind down the road, and hearing your statement about the drive makes me feel even better. Thanks Don!

Don,
On eBay there are bellows being sold for a volvo that have a flapper in them, would these be usable on a 270? My boat also has the broken flapper and this has been worrying me. Or should I forget about it?
Thanks,
Jerry
