Volvo Penta 3.0 GL vs 3.0 GS power ratings

hi ! any ideas why the 3.0 GL, in all versions , is rated at 135 hp and the 3.0 GS in most versions at 150 hp ( but there are some versions with the 135hp rating ) ?

both models are rated at the prop so thats not the answer i think- does the GS really has 15 horses more or is it just a marketing issue?

the GL and the GS are both carbed - the GXI ( also 150 hp) is injected .

Hi,

I have a 1999 3.0 GS. I did some research and The 2nd letter designation refers to the fuel delivery installed and/or output.

L= Limited
S=superior
X= execptional

It's a silly numbers game, some years they called them GL, other years GS.. The engines never changed, just the designation and how the hp rating was determined.

GL - 2bbl carburetor
GS - 4bbl carburetor
GI - TBI
So on and so forth...

It's a 3.0L, it only comes with a 2bbl carb

Well, for the v6 & V8 engines, thats the protocol.

I found this on the 3.0 GS, direct from VP. It has 135 stated horsepower.

, otherwise please go to sterndrives, 100-200hp and 4 cyl and all versions of the 3.0 will be listed. ALL of the 3.0 GL are rated 135 hp, MOST of the 3.0 GS are rated there 150 hp but some versions for whatever reason 135hp - officially by volvo penta.

the pdf of VP with the 3.0 GS and 135 hp rating is also interesting !
