Volvo Penta 290DP Questions

So last summer we bought a 1990 Carver 27' with twin 4.3 volvos. I believe it came from sea level elevation, possibly salt water
Questions:

1. What WOT rpms should I be seeing with the 4.3's?

2. Could somebody explain the Prop nomenclature of the volvos, such as B3, etc...

3. I believe my gear ratio is 2.3:1, any reccomendations on prop size for around 4,000' elevation?

4. Engines only have around 175 hours on them. We did common matenence before winterizing, but could anybody provide suggestions or a checklist to make sure they are good to go? They seem to run fine...

Remember, they are the duoprops

Boat seemed extremely slow when we took it out last summer for its maiden voyage

Sorry, I'm sure these are very common questions, Im new to the Volvos.

Thanks in advance!

The dual props on Volvo are different diameters and pitch between the two props, and are designed to work together as a set. You would not want to use a B3 fwd prop and a B4 aft prop together. Since the are different sizes volvo just numbered the sets. The B just indicates they are aluminum props for your style drive. C would be stainless steel for your drive. The sizes range from B1 to B9.
We also have a Prop forum for further prop discussion. http://forums.iboats.com/forumdisplay.php?f=35

If you have the full model number of your engine, or the serial number, you can go to this link http://www.volvopenta.com/volvopent...lication_search/pages/publication_search.aspx and download an owners manual and other info for your engine. The owners manual also has a maintenance schedule in it.

Volvo's patented prop design uses two different diameters and pitches. Forward prop is larger and less aggressive. Rear prop is smaller and more aggressive.
They do not list diameter/pitch, but use an alpha/numeric code system.
With the B series for the gasoline engines and AQ series drives, the propeller aggressiveness increases as the number increases. A B-3 set will be less aggressive than a B-4 and so on.
For your drives you are limited to the B (aluminum) or C (SS) series props.

I believe that the 2.30:1 ratio is correct for the 4.3.
You'll just have to test prop sets and shoot for your wot rpm. See your OEM manual for this.

Check list should include removing these props, cleaning the shaft and hub splines and greasing them with a water proof grease that contains nothing conductive. The B props can be prone to corrosion and if they got stuck, you'll end up cutting them off.

Re: Volvo Penta 290DP Questions

your other post indicates that your at 4000' elevation, and can only get 3000 RPM at WOT.

your down on power a bit due to the elevation, and if the carbs havent been re-jetted for the altitude, you will be further down on power. I would perform a full tune up - plugs, cap, rotor, filters, etc. make sure everything is working mechanically.

your boat would most likely have been originally set up with B3's from Carver. I would give them a call.

Didn't realize he had a post in the prop forum.

Like captmello mentioned, and I did in your prop forum topic, with only 3000 rpm, you have problems other than the prop.
We need info now. Drive ratio from the tag on top of your upper gear box. Engine model number or serial number, and what all you've done to attempt to fix the problem.

Re: Volvo Penta 290DP Questions

talking to my father, he could not clearly remember if 3,000 rpm was the most it would do. He was the last one to drive it.

Found this information from the outdrives:

Props are B5's

Gear ratio is 2.30:1

The tags on the outdrives, from what I could tell, said:

Right Outdrive:

854020 DP-A 2,30 3102070506

Left Outdrive:

854020 DP-A 2,30 3102070567

Re: Volvo Penta 290DP Questions

You need to find out what your WOT rpm is for both engines, at normal load, and best trim. That rpm is the most important factor in choosing props or finding a problem with the engine.

Re: Volvo Penta 290DP Questions

B5's may be a bit much, however as Don mentioned, what is the WOT RPM of each engine. if they are both identical, then you may be over propped.
