A Volvo Penta 290. What kind of engine-4..6..8..cyld. Anybody know about them? Expensive to replace or fix?

Hi Bill<br /><br />The 290 is a drive type. This i/o drive can be used with motors from 145 to 300 HP with different gear ratios and pitch. Motors are different i.e. 4 cyl volvo gasoline 145HP, 6 cyl volvo turbodiesel 270HP. 8 cyl GM gasoline 300 HP.

A 290 outdrive is used on 4 cyl. AQ131, AQ151, AQ171 and all V8's. Even diesel engines. Outdrive prices are competative with Mercruiser sterndrives but are built far more superior. A lot figures into prices. Overall not as expensive to repair because of original workmanship. Parts availability is better on older Volvo's than other makes.
