I'm looking at buying a completely restored 1975 bayliner with a volvo penta 280. I was told the motor is approx 160 hp (not sure exactly). I'm curious about the availabilty of parts, longevity, quality etc. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.....

Can anyone tell me about this motor/drive combo?

First of all, you have to tell us what engine you have, a model number, serial number, 4 cyl, 6 cyl, 8 cyl, gas engine, or maybe a diesel? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
Sorry, no mind readers here, and no pictures to look at.
Here is a list of the out of production engine Volvo has out there. Perhaps yours is there.

As far as the 280, it a great drive, and parts are available. But like any other drive, it takes constant maintenance. No maintenance and they go bad.
Volvo, unlike OMC, still exists.

The only numbers I can see on the motor are B30, 170, 1000198. Not sure if any of these numbers mean anything. Thanks....

Start simple..4 cylinder, 6?...8?
But to put even simpler...yeah... parts are avaiable, dont care what motor ya got.

I'm curious about the availabilty of parts, longevity, quality etc

It would take a book to tell you that...one simple question at a time

It's an AQ170-C
Parts availability, yes, but expensive
Longevity---- Well, it's a 75 and still running.
Quality, as above, it's still going after 30 some years.
