Volvo Penta 275 Tune Up

I am very new at marine motors despite a long history with working on old Volkwagen air cooled engines...I know....far cry from this new venture. I will be looking to set the timing and I do have the firing order and all posted on the carburetor head....what I am trying to figure out is.....if this thing has coolant in it...am I able to run it out of water...or is there a place to plug in a hose while I am running it out of water....I hope this doesn't sound stupid...I am just starting to navigate my way around this thing. Hi pentapeanut, welcome to iboats!

275 could be an outdrive model or a horsepower rating, it doesn't really give us much information. There should be a model designation such as AQ###. How about a year/model etc for the engine/outdrive package.

You can get muffs at wal-mart to cover the inlets that the water pump sucks water through. I would say get a book and read up a little bit before digging in but there is plenty of info on these forums. Hook the garden hose to the muffs and turn the water on about half way crank your engine and make sure you have enough water being spit back out and if not give it some more water. Watch your temp and dont run her like a stock car.

I am about 2 months old in the boating arena I had a Johnson 110 now I have a Volvo w/ a 270 out drive and it sounds like your out drive is a Volvo 275 and you probably have a Volvo 6cyl stern or a maybe a 4, the poster above is right you need a little more engine info

Boat Model/Year Engine yadda yadda.

Might want to head over to the Volvo Site and download a free owners manual for your AQ131A, I'm sure there is info in there you can use.
To run it out of the water, you MUST use muffs or you will destroy your raw water pump impeller, you can get them from about any marine store. They go over the water pickups on the sides of the drive. There is also a secondary pickup at the bottom of the lower unit that should be plugged when running on muffs.
