volvo penta 275 rough reverse shift

I got a 1986 bayliner with a volvo penta 275 that shifts into reverse with a good thunk, foward is pretty smooth. I would appreciate any help on this. I've messed with this boat quite abit, i may be able to help with your problems.

Old Volvo's are kind of clunky to begin with. Check to make sure your reverse lock is functioning properly and keep the RPM's down when shifting should help. If not you may have a bad clutch in the drive.

its likely not a bad clutch but a worn keeper in the bottom of the top box, made of brass and gets "dished" creating excessive end play. its a fairly simple job to remove the top box and adress this.
