I was out the other day and found myself in some weeds. Once clearing the weeds I tried to accelerate but was full of weeds.

I raised the outdrive to clean the weeds. I found the prop cone and center locking bolt to be loose.

I've never had this happen before. Naturally, I didn't have my toolbox with me. I hand tightened the cone and locking bolt and made my way back to the landing. When I got to the landing the cone and bolt had come off completely but the prop was still there.

I had a spare cone but no lock bolt. I bought a bolt at the hardware store to get me through the weekend and everything seemed to go back together fine. I torqued the prop cone on pretty tight using a screwdriver through the hole and tightened the new bolt down.

I headed out on the water again last night. We motered across the lake. When we got to a spot to stop, I reversed and heard a noise from the rear. Yep this time I lost the prop also. I managed to get back to the landing with my spare just slid on the propshaft with no fastener at all.

Has anyone ever experienced anything like this with an older Volvo outdrive? Should I use some loctite on the bolt from now on? This is getting expensive.

Re: Volvo Penta 275 prop cone question

Has anyone ever lost their prop and prop cone this way???

Just trying to see if this common or unique to my outdrive.

Any comments would be great.

Been there, done that. Donated a prop to Watts Bar Lake. My prop cone uses locking tabs instead of the bolt, which I think was an older style. As long as the tabs stay bent, I don't have any problems, but I learned not to reuse the old washer!!

Ya, I had the locking tabs on my old 270. The difference is the long and short hub props. The long hub props use the cone and locking bolt.

I lost two cones and one prop in two days.

that prop cone torques to something like 80ftlbs,the center bolt either 12 or 25ftlbs depending on if its the small 5/16ths bolts or the 1/2 bolt.

Mine's got the 5/16 locking bolt. 80f/lb, huh, I may not be getting that with the screwdrive through the hole, but the cone never loosened or fell off over the last two years. How do I put my torque wrench on the cone?:rolleyes:
