I have a 1986 Bayliner that I have put a ton of money into, new motor (350 V8), etc. We finally got the motor running perfectly after replacing the dist and numerous other parts.

Well come to find out the outdrive (Volvo Penta 275) is also shot. I need to get a new outdrive but don't know what I need. Do I have to get another 275 or will another outdrive work. I see there are some Mercruiser Alpha 1's on here for about $1200. Will this work? Please help I have alway got great advice from you guys!

Thanks in advance!

The only way you could use a Mercruiser is to change EVERYTHING but the engine. Along with redoing the transom, as the Volvo has a bigger hole.
You will have to get a Volvo drive, either a 270, 275, or a 280. BUT, it must be the correct gear ratio (1.68:1) and you have to make sure the helmet pivot pin that attaches the steering helmet to the top of the outdrive is the same type. There are 3 different types, and are not interchangable.
The clamp ring on the outdrive could be replaced if you find one of the correct model and gear ratio, but it would have to be reshimmed by a dealer to get it right.

With the cost and availability of complete outdrives of this era, you may look into fixing the outdrive you have. Parts are available. Do you know whats wrong with it? I have the same drive, very reliable and easily maintained. A used outdrive may have other issues that need fixing anyway.

Good luck!

I took the boat in after replacing the motor because it was bogging down once you went to open up the secondaries. It would run fine until then. We got that fixed but when you get to about 4000 rpm it would slip out of gear.

Talking with the mechanic he thought maybe the oil in the out drive was to thick and that would make it slip. Well we changed that out and cleaned it up but the same problem was still there. His only advice was to try and find a new (used) one and replace it. After work today I was going to go back in and talk with them about winterizing it and see what else he thinks about it.

Your responses are much appreciated. Thanks!

Sounds more like you need a real mechanic, not a new drive.
What oil did he put back in the drive, and what did he take out. Was it milky?

No he did not mention that it was milky. He put 30 weight back into it. What would make it start slipping in the first place.

The problem in the area I live in (Iowa) is there is only two marine shops in a 100 mile radius from here so taking it to another shop for another opinion would be really tough to do.

Thanks guys!

It's an old thread Bubba, Darin hasn't visited the forum since his last reply.
