Ok heres what happened. I did a tune up on the boat, new plugs, wires, cap, rotor etc, rebuilt the carb as the fuel shut off valve was sticking, also installed a fuel/water seperator. i got it running set throttle to little above idle went to get my stethascope, and the engine took off ran up to 3k rpms on the muffs , put it in neutral went to 1k idle noticed no water coming out exhaust, and none in the sea strainer and drive was hot. its a volvo penta 270 and for the reference the engine is an AQ125a. After the tune up i dont think ive ever heard this engine run that smooth. My question is before i replace the raw water pump on the engine is there one in the out drive. it maybe ran for 30-40second or less on high speed(stupid human here ) Temp never got above 180 on engine..

Thanks

Normally i run it in a big tub of water.. I picture Don S's Signature in my mind right now

3K rpm on muffs will not damage anthing, since the temp never got over 180, you are fine, they run normally at 190.
The engine has a closed cooling system, which is why it didn't overheat a lot.

Ok cool thats good to hear, but i did smell burning rubber, perhaps the muffs came loose i dunno, i generally prefer to run in a big tub. It wasnt until i knocked the idle down that the water stopped coming out the exhaust. Before it was getting the side of my shed wet.

Is there a impeller in the out drive that i may have burned up too? or just the one on the engine. The impeller in the engine is a couple years old and i seem to remember the orignal owner telling me that it was a couple years old, so probably just as well it burntup in my drive way not on the lake.

no pump in the outdrive.;)

Thanks, looks like we wrote at the same time :). Thats good news. and the impeller on this boat looks easy as pie to change, unlike when i worked on a mercrusier one i had to take pully off, remove the altenator etc.. Yikes..

You most likely burned up the exhaust hose between the exhaust manifold and the down pipe. You wil have to pull the exhaust manifold to replace it. But it's not a big job.

Thanks for the ip. i'll check it out, dont remember seeing exhaust in the engine compartment, but i wasnt looking for it either...

The impler still had most the teeth intact, one tooth was broken in half, atleast 3/4 the teeth on it had cracks when u looke close at it. I tried to get a good picture.

For the fun of it i turned the muffs back on and noticed hardly any water going into the raw water pump, it was hard not to get the muffs to spray water all over the place tho. I'll check it out make sure nothing is plugging the hose up.

My camera has a strong flash, its pretty chewd up and cracked. not as bad as some that i've seen, but this is probably enough to cause it to not pump water up to the exchanger.

****Edit***** The rubber hose from the exhaust riser to transom sheild is not melted. :D. Now were did i put that new impeller...

That impeller looks terrible! Those fins are supposed to be straight not bent over. You should replace every two years.

Like you said, "Better in the driveway than out on the water."

Better change the rubber between the exhaust manifold and down pipe like Don mentioned. That could have easily gotten burned when you ran with no water. If its bad it could restrict the flow or leak water into the boat.

I will definatly check into it. I dont think it ran long enough to do any damage but u never know. i'll put the new impeller in (i have seen worse on my buds Mercurser), but yes that impeller is bad and shoulda been changed long ago. If it helps when it stopped pumping water out the exhaust, the flapper on the drive was still going crazy and no water in bilge.
but i deffinatly will check into and may replace it anyway. Or i'll haul the boat down to Don and have him do it. 1.5 hr drive. I may have him do my winterizing this year..
