ok I am at my wits end here.....the motor runs smooth at idle...smooth at semi slow acceleration but it i accelerate fast it pops threw the carb or bogs out....I have checked the timing it is at 6 btdc changed the points reconfirmed gap at 16 thousands new plugs new wires new coil new cap and rotor button.....carb has been taken apart cleaned out new gaskets new throttle accelerator pump....new new new new......I know it has to be something dumb but what.....what did I miss

When it's popping thru the carb start pulling one plug wire at a time and see if you can determine which cylinder is causing the problem. Do a compression check. Could be an exhaust valve not opening due to worn cam lobe. Lean fuel supply to carb, plugwire crossed. You should also set the points with a dwell meter.

Compression test first with all the plugs pulled out.
cylinder balance test,pull 1 plug wire at a time looking for the same rpm drop.
Popping thru the carb in most cases idicates a valve trouble,lazy,burnt,bent,eroded seat,sticking valve,maybe a blown head gasket.

I noticed you set the gap on your points, not the dwell. Go back and reset the points to 62? +- 3?. (stay at 62? or 63? for best results)
Those engines are very touchy about dwell, timing, and carb adjustment.
The carbs also have to be adjusted so they both open at exactly the same time and are adjusted so the mixture is equal (Syncronized) and the accelerator pumps in the carbs are working properly.
If it's not all set properly, it will try to blow the flame arrestor off.

hey don I have a single solex 1 brl and I see no dwell setting on this distributor.....usualy there is a little flip up window on the cap but i see nothing......1988 volvo penta 230 B

That was on OLD Chevy V8 distributors, not Volvo 4 cylinder engines. You have to remove the cap and adjust the points till you get it right.

My mistake on the carb, I was thinking 250, not 230. But you will still need to get the mixture and accelerator pump right.

just hooked a tach and dwell meter to it and it is right on 63........what is the best way to check the accelorater pump

ok went out today after checking the dwell ...ok setting the carb....ok ran great....ran it about 10 14 miles came back and it started runnin bad again would not idle slow performance......I am going to check the pickup in the tank tomorrow????????? what do you think

thanks for the link I ran the tests and all is good. I decided to run the engine on a 6 gallon tank and it ran like a dream.......Is there anything I can put in the tank to work with the older gas I have in it.....there is 75 gallons in there I believe....I filled it up before I went out on sunday....added 20 gallons of high test. I want to dump the fuel but have no idea were or who will take it.

Did you do the fuel system tests on the water? The tests will not work on muffs.
I don't think bad fuel is your problem since it runs good for a while. Bad fuel would not work all the time.

Ha, go with Don S's advice, getting rid of 75 gallons of fuel would be like getting rid of a dead body
