Hi I have a problem with my drive belt slipping forward almost off the cam gear. On starting it for the first time after 4 months of winter season, it fired up but stopped 20 seconds later, on checking I noticed that the timing had slipped due to to slipping of belt. I dismantled and fitted a new belt and tensioner being careful to follow the rules as stated in the workshop manual. I have dismantled and refitted 4 times now and it still slips after 20 seconds. All cogs seem to be ok and in line. ???

Did you replace the tensioner?

Yes, new tensioner and belt. The only other thing I noticed was the rust on the cogs. I gave them a quick clean though.

I have been at it all day today again, it keeps working its way off after only half a minute. I have checked the bearings on the three cogs for wear and they seem ok, the auxiliary gear is the one that I thought would be the problem but seems ok. I reset the tensioner twice as the manual suggests, all marks are spot on, it starts first time, then walks off the cogs within seconds. I am completely baffled. If anybody has any idea I would be grateful.

It may be that the rusty pulleys need replaced.

Mine runs at the very front (towards bow) of the cam sprocket.
My tensioner is fine and doesn't tillt.

Could be our heads are worn and the cam front is tilted down a bit.
Looks like the aluminum head is the camshsft bearing surface, so shimming won't work.

Maybe we should modify our cam sprocket to look like this with a flange keeping the belt on.

Thanks for that link. The cam pulley shown certainly looks much safer. Trying now to locate one.

Also discovered that there should be a retaining washer both sides of the belt cog on the crankshaft. When I checked behind the pulley wheel the rear washer is in but the front one is missing so the belt rides up the back of the pulley. Must have been the previous owner!!
Just ordered one. Let you know.
