I bought a used 1974 Ranger with original Volvo Penta MD 10 A internal gasoline engine (2 cylinder). The starter generater (a two belt pulley system that turns flywheel to start motor, and recharges battery) is fried. I can't find a replacement, and most mechanics have never seen a belt driven starter. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to replace or start engine???

I haven't found anything in Volvo called an MD 10, but I do know it's a diesel. The MD stands for Marine Diesel.
If you put gasoline in it, then you may have a real problem.
Here is a link to an MD 1B that may be close to what you have.

MD-1B

My mistake. MB 10 A. It's definitely gas.
