What is the full model number of your engine. VP made lots of engine types.

Regarding your problem, start with the battery connections. Have to be clean and tight. Wing nuts slightly loose will cause your problem.

If it was a single loud click every time you turned the key, it will be a bad starter solenoid, ifit was a single faint click, then it's the starter slave solenoid (relay). If it was a rapid clicking, then a loose or dirty battery cable connection.

Re: volvo penta 190 starting problem

Loose connections is most likely your cause for the rapid clicks, that or a low battery. But since it works most of the time, a loose or dirty conneciton is the likely cause.
While timing can cause your dieseling problem, it's probably not the problem with that ignition system, unless you have moved the distributor. You need to put it into base timing mode to even think about trying to adjust it.
To high an idle rpm is the most likely cause of your dieseling. Should be between 650 and 700 rpm in neutral, but final check is 550 to 650 in Fwd. gear in the water.

Check all your connections to make sure they are clean and tight. When you try to start it, then it clicks does the engine turn at all or do you just hear the clicking sound?
