I didn’t want to call you out by name but you all know who you are and thanks ahead of time.
Here is the deal. As most will know I was having a trim tab issue. Even though I never use them and they were install correctly they still were active all the time. Even causing the tab plains to become “hooked”. After much debate and a couple emails to the Tabman we came to the conclusion that the tabs were to big (instead of 18” I needed 12”) and I needed new cylinders that will allow for another 1” of lift to pull the tab higher out of the water. So I take everything off the transom and send it back to Bennett (the best company in the world by the way) for a free exchange. I do this on Wednesday and of course there is no way they will be back before the week end so I seal everything up and on Saturday I take the boat out for a ride.
I ran a couple test and now I am not sure what to do.
Test I
I started from the boat ramp with everything in the same place that it was on my last trip except the rams and the tabs are taken off. One thing I noticed right away. The boat backed up much faster then it usually would. Just in gear it moved twice as fast as it did before. I can live with that. Then I preceded to burn off a ¼ tank of gas putting it through its paces. My conclusion was that there was not much difference then before. To use a couple Nascar terms. It was a little loose in the *** end, I guess the tabs dig in when you go into a turn. And the bow didn’t push (plow) as bad. She seemed to be a little more on top of the water. My top end didn’t change and there was very little difference where the rpm/mph was before. It was a little windy and choppy out so all and all it was about the same. Also the transom area seem to be kicking up more spray then usual. I guess the tabs blocked that before.
WOT = 4700rpm / 61mph
Test II
The only thing I did different this time was move the trim pin out one hole. Before I tried this and the prop would cavatate real bad at all rpm’s. With no hope of this working I saved it to last and almost didn’t do it. This time I go to take off and the bow comes up a lot. I am thinking this is good but it did this the last time and when it got on a plain it would break loose. Over it goes and it just keeps on going. I start gassing it and it stays hooked up. Around 32 to 3600 rpm’s it feel a little loose and I am ready for to go nuts but it doesn’t so then I start to fire wall it and it stays hooked up. Now the boat is going faster then it ever has before on this prop by 7mph (well that is what the speedometer said but I have never seen it wrap around that far) It felt more like 10+mph.
I figure the reason it felt “soft” between 32 to 3600rpm’s is because the transom came up a little. Those rpm’s are the flat cruising speeds. So the bow would want to sink a little because the thrust at the transom is not enough to keep it up and push down the transom far enough to keep it hooked up. Normally this is where you would trim down the outdrive a little for cruising and would move it up higher for top end. But I do not have that option at the moment. There is no way I can leave 10 mph on the table and on top of that my speeds were much faster for the same rpm’s I was running before. IE, Position 1; Around 4000rpm’s I would be running around 50mph. Position 2 When I was doing 4000rpm’s I was going 60mph.
I need trim, BAD!!
I start the hunt for the elusive Volvo “T” drives once again (I have been looking off and on for 5 years) and just by dumb luck I find this on eBay that night and buy it.

So now it is mine I am not sure how to go about making it work. They guy I out bid got the matching trim pump. Do I have to use a Volvo trim pump or can I use a Merc Pump or something else? Is there anything special about hooking this up? Special hydraulic line, splitters for the lines, etc, etc? Is there any difference in the Volvo 270 transom shield and the 280 T shield (bigger, smaller cut out, do the bolt holes line up)? Put it this way I have a Volvo 270 now and I have never seen in person a “T” model but I plan on installing the new shield on my boat. What do I do?
Thanks
Mark

I think I will keep it. The boat has no "stringers" to speak of (except for the last three feet of the boat where the motor sits. The liner must be all the support for the boat. Also if it wasn't built like that I am sure I would be rebuilding the hull after 34 years but it is still as strong as the day it was built. Last, when I want to build a race boat I am going to use a different Nova and build this.
Re: Volvo outdrive help please.

if i understand that picture correctly, once the outdrive is locked on the pin, the housing holding the pin moves the pin up and down, thus making it trimable?

what is that housing from?

Simple isn't it. It flips me out on how rare these are. Mercruiser was putting trim on all there outdrives back then and yet Volvo hardly sold any with this option. Like I said I have been looking off and on for years and over that time I have only seen a couple come up for sale. They always go for real big bucks. Just got lucky this time.
It is a Volvo 280 "T" model transom shield.

All I can say is to keep looking and have a bank loan available because you may need it. I hit eBay every couple days and do a search for them. Finally found one in my price range.

Another question. How many PSI does it take to push these things? I have been looking at a couple universal pumps but don't know if they are strong enough.

Re: Volvo outdrive help please.

I would think any Mercruiser or OMC pump would work...
I think the relief valves are set around 2000 psi in the Merc pumps... I'll bet the pressure never exceeds 500 or so until the rams reach the end of their travel.
Nice Score - I have been looking for one on and off too.
About 5 years ago I passed on a $600 boat that had a 280T drive like that... Kicking myself ever since. The engine ran even...

Alright I can come up with a Merc pump easy enough. Is there any problem with Volvo using tranny fluid and Merc pumps use motor oil?

Re: Volvo outdrive help please.

those rams won't care about the fluid as long as it's wet, incompressible and mineral based.
Hose connections could be the tricky part..I doubt they all use the same style. Are the lines with that unit?
