I have to change the gimbal bearing out on a Volvo outdrive. I do not know the year; below are the SN:

Outdrive 28160744B
Engine CU28983

Looking for help on finding manuals and/or diagrams, tips, etc. This site always has the knowledge- I hope to be able to give it back someday!

Thanks in advance

I can tell you that to do this job you are going to need some specialty tools like an outdrive alignment tool, Gimball puller etc.

If you do not have these tools or have never done this before...you are better served taking it to a professional boat mechanic....otherwise you risk damaging other parts of the outdrive.

Just my two cents:D

From what I can tell, the alignment tools is not needed. Also I found this post from the illustrious Don S:

"You don't NEED the specail tools, but you do need something to press the bearings on the shaft and into the housing so you push on the proper part of the bearings. If you are pushing the bearing onto the shaft you need to press against the inner race of the bearing. When pressing a bearing into the housing, you need to push on the outer race."

I would like to find specific directions on how to do this, such as how to get the old ones out, and the proper way to put them in (even without the proper tools). I do have a tool I bought on ebay that is supposed to work for pressing in gimbal bearings. I bought the manual (Seloc) and it conveniently DOES NOT COVER THIS IN ANYWAY. All they have is one diagram with no instructions.

From what I can tell, the alignment tools is not needed.
Depends on if you have the 270/280 type or the newer SX type. Which one do you have?

That drive SN sounds like one for a 280 outdrive. They don't have gimbal bearings.
What you need to do is post the Model numbers for your engine and outdrive. There is no way to convert SN's to what you have.

Model number AQ225 on the engine, and the outdrive is a 280. It appears to be the drawing attached below, and I have also attached some actual pictures:

ps the debris is from taking pictures while pressure washing the bilge area. It to be appears worse than it really is!

Re: Volvo outdrive gimbal replacement

Yes, thank you. I am wondering how the layman (aka hacker) does this without the tools specified? Is this possible and/or advisable?

-Getting them out: Slide hammer? Which way do they exit (towards the front or rear, or does it matter)
-Putting them in- I know about the pressure on the correct parts of the bearings... Any other tips? Difficulty level? Anyone done this without the tools?
