I currently have a 290a drive. Is that a much better drive than a 280 drive? Can I swap a 280 drive where my 290 is now?
Is it possible to put a 280 lower unit on a 290a upper?

Basically the drive is the same, the transom shield and mounting methods do change.

No.

Yes it will fit.

Is your 290 a DP?

Thats good news! Thank you.

No, its just a single prop, is the 280 not as good of a lower unit, is it a bad idea to use a 280 lower?

The insides of a 290 single prop drive, is almost identical to a 280. And the differences don't make the drive more or less desireable.
You will not be able to tell (while running the boat) the difference between the 280 and 290 lowers.

those are some alleged volvo part numbers that are supposed to be 280's but he isn't too sure...

I didn't know where to look to try to match up numbers.

The biggest difference between the 290 and 280 is the power trim.

You could most likely bolt a 280 upper gear housing and a 280 Lower onto your 290 intermediate. You may not even have to pull the drive. I have not done this but I think its doable. The lower needs to be the correct ratio.

I would try to use parts from an outdrive as close to the same year as you can.

Good luck!!

The v8 is a 1.6 ratio right?

Yes.

the one flaw in my plan is that By changing the upper and lower, you may be required to reshim or between the three parts. If not parts will wear prematurely. I'm not sure how important that is. You many want to call around to get some estimates. May not be so expensive.

Or,

You could search for a used 290 and throw it on. If you found a DP.

Gonna cost some bucks Either way you go. Good luck.
